Dogwood flower by Noa

Dogwood flower is a species of flowering plant in the family Cornaceae. This flower has a technical name: Cornus florida. Dogwood trees grow and bloom over most of the eastern half of the United States and along the Pacific Coast in U.S. Under ideal conditions, the trees can reach a height of around 30 feet, with multilayered branches that can spread out to about 20 feet.

Interesting fact: The four showy dogwood flower petals aren’t actually petals as botanists define them. The dogwood petals instead are modified leaves called bracts that surround a cluster of about 20 tiny yellow flowers. As the flowers bloom, the showy bracts expand to attract pollinating insects. Each bract has a dark red-brown indentation at its tip.

We also figure out that all three species are perennials, that Magnolia and Dogwood are flowering trees and that all need to be in half shade. We also noticed that Magnolia and Dogwood are North plants and Passion flower is a south plant. By comparing the pollen of those to species, we conclude that Dogwood and Magnolia are related when Passion flower is probably just an analogy.

Welcome to our blog!!!
Thank you for joining us in our research. This blog is led by 4 people. Noa Moulin, Amelia Muldrew, Kayla Heitzman, and Daniel Bivens. We are investigating 3 plants to see if they are related. These plants are: the Passion Flower (Passiflora Incarnata L.), Dogwood (Cornus Nuttalia), and Magnolia (Magnolia Grandiflora).
